New Media Production

I also had the pleasure of taking the New Media Production course. This course provides a solid foundation of technical skills that students can build upon for the rest of their careers. Students learn how to design and develop web products that function effectively with multiple platforms. I got to create a few different websites, build my own Jukebox player, and more. Here are some highlights from the course!

Bootstrap Website

I to create a bootstrap-controlled responsive resume. Bootstrap is a popular, open-source Javascript framework that people use to design websites and apps. Our site had to have a minimum of 6 pages and an external CSS page. This assignment allowed me to illustrate my knowledge of using “mobile first” design. The site contains a landing/home page, a skills page, a work experience page, an education page, a portfolio page, and a page about my classmates. It has pictures of them and links to their websites.

Jukebox

For this assignment, we were tasked with creating an interactive jukebox. I chose five different songs that the javascript media player loads dynamically. The songs are “Social Sites” by Cosmo Pyke, “Send Me Out” by Kelela, “At All” by Kaytranada, “Carbonated” by Mount Kimbie and “Forget” by Lianne La Havas.

I also used .fadeIn, .fadeOut, and .animate jQuery functions to move the cover art images when users click on the pictures. This was one of the most difficult projects to complete, due to the Javascript. However, it probably the most fun because I am a HUGE music lover.

WordPress Site

Our third assignment included us creating a WordPress site. This assignment required at least 3 Plugins, which help extend functionality or add new functions to WordPress sites. I chose to use a Google Doc embedder for my Contact Me (Google Form) page, Akismet to prevent spam, and Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights. This plugin helps site owners see how visitors find and use their sites. Assignment 3 also required at least 8 different pages, with 4 of them being new content. For my new content pages, I included an about me page, a list of my favorite albums from this year, a contact me page, and a page about my recent concert experiences. For previous content, I included some of my previous writing work and graphic design work. These pages include a magazine article I wrote about student activists on campus, a journalism assignment about the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, a journalism assignment about students’ homecoming concert preferences, and a page about my graphic design work. I enjoyed the fact that this assignment allowed me to write some new content, and I had a lot of fun writing about my favorite albums of 2017.

Final Project

For the final project, I decided to revamp my website, courtneytee.com. The original site contained 3 pages – a homepage, a resume, and a portfolio page. The new site contains a homepage, a resume page, a portfolio, a projects page, writing samples, and a contact page. I incorporated a mobile-first design this time so that my site can be opened easily on mobile devices. It also incorporates the Bootstrap (HTML/CSS) pages and  WordPress posts. I wanted to make sure that I put maximum effort into this site so that I could be proud to show potential employers and so that the site would aid in future employment/internships.
